Free to Be

So if the son makes you free, you will be free for sure.

(NLV, John 8:36)

Easter represents Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. He did this so we would have the option to be free from sin or transgressions against God.

We can also be enslaved in other ways like in our minds. When we allow self-limiting beliefs to dictate our altitude, this is not freedom, but bondage to such thoughts. Jesus died to redeem us from the chains of sin and our freedom should not stop there.

In Alcoholics Anonymous, the first step is admitting “we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.” Similarly, to be free from the shackles of sin or any other crippling behavior, which begins with a thought, you must admit you have an issue. This act of surrender opens the door to change.

We have the liberty to approach God in prayer and not only ask Him for forgiveness of sin, but for liberation from mental slavery. It does not have to be anything formal or fancy. He understands the intent of your heart.

We all have times when we make mistakes. But God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness, but first we must confess them (NIV, 1 John 1:9). As a new person, a Christian, you no longer make sin a practice.

As we strive to adopt new thoughts and habits, we will feel the pull to regress to the old self. But with prayer, purpose, and practice we can be permanently transformed into a new person. This will be freedom to be the self-actualized person, the best asset, God created us to be.
